Internship/Co-op/Research

NSERC-URSA

Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are intended to stimulate interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields. They help students to gain research work experience that complements studies in an academic setting; these awards can help provide students with financial support through their host university.

RISE

RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. RISE offers unique opportunities for Bachelor students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities & research institutes provide housing assistance.

OGI

The Ontario Genomics Institute’s (OGI’s) Summer Research Fellowships offer undergraduate students a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful, real-life research in genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, or GE³LS (ethical, economic, environmental, legal, and/or social issues relating to genomics and proteomics research) in academia or industry. They form part of OGI’s efforts to build the future of genomics in Ontario.

In 2013, OGI will sponsor up to six research fellows, each of whom will engage in one of the following:

Laboratory Research, development of and/or analysis of policy, GE³LS, technology development

SURP

The Institute of Medical Science (IMS) has an exceptional Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). This program provides an opportunity for undergraduate B.Sc. and medical students to become involved in projects relating to biomedical research. Projects range across a broad spectrum of disciplines, from molecular biology and cognitive science to clinical investigation and bioethics. Participants selected for the program spend 3 months in the summer (June-August) in a laboratory or clinical setting, working on a research project.  During this time students are encouraged to participate in laboratory meetings, data analysis, journal clubs, and/or appropriate clinical research rounds at the affiliated teaching hospitals.

KRSS

The Keenan Research Summer Student (KRSS) Program provides opportunities for undergraduate and medical students to conduct research in a laboratory and/or clinical setting at St. Michael's under the supervision of a principal investigator (scientist and/or MD). Students are also involved in educational programming such as seminars, networking activities and a poster competition.

SSURE

The SickKids Summer Research (SSuRe) Program provides opportunities for university students to conduct research in a laboratory or clinical setting at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) under the supervision of a Research Institute scientist.

The program runs for 15 weeks from early May to mid-August. Specific start dates are arranged directly with the hiring scientists. The program includes weekly seminars presented by the Hospital and Research Institute staff members. The final event of the program is the Annual Summer Student Symposium. At the Symposium, most students present the results of their summer projects in poster format while seven outstanding students present orally. Awards are presented to select students with exceptional research projects.

BSSSRP

Brain Sciences Summer Student Research Program

Summer studentships typically run from May to September of each year. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a university program and have at least a B+ average in their most recent year of study. Summer student positions through the Sunnybrook Research Institute Brain Sciences Research Program are not posted. Instead, students are responsible for contacting individual scientists directly whose research may be of interest to see if he or she is willing to supervise a student and to discuss potential projects.

D+H SRI

Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) offers a Summer Student Research Program, made possible by the generous donation from Davis + Henderson Corporation, which provides undergraduate students with a unique hospital-based research experience that showcases the postgraduate environment as a prospective career. Within this program, SRI provides an orientation and a seminar series and hosts an end-of-summer research project competition. The summer employment term runs from May to September.

UROP

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is designed to provide senior, high-performing undergraduate students with summer research positions, and lead to opportunities in graduate studies at McMaster. This is a chance to work with a faculty member on a research project, a lecture series, and a final poster symposium.

Positions are open to engineering students both at McMaster and other universities across Canada. So, feel free to tell a friend.

IIDR Fellowship

The Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research (IIDR) is founded on principles of interdisciplinary collaboration, research excellence, and commitment to training the next generations of infectious disease researchers and clinicians.

The IIDR members are from three faculties and eight departments at McMaster University. More than 400 graduate students, post-doctoral and clinical fellows research various programs funded by provincial, national, and international peer reviewed agencies as well as the private sector.
